French is the official language of Quebec

By virtue of the Charter of the French Language, French is the official language of Quebec. Therefore, all companies doing business within the territory of Quebec must respect certain requirements aimed at making utilization of the French language general within the scope of their activities. Requirements vary according to the number of employees the company has in Quebec.

The website of the Office québécois de la langue française states that:

  • companies have an obligation to respect the fundamental right of workers to conduct their activities in French;
  • companies are required to respect the right of consumers of goods and services to be informed and served in French;
  • companies employing 50 or more persons in Quebec are subject to additional requirements and must undertake a formal francization process so that the French language is implanted and used properly within the scope of their Quebec activities. This process leads to the obtaining of a francization certificate issued by the Office québécois de la langue française;
  • companies employing 100 or more persons in Quebec must create a francization committee made up of at least six (6) people, half of which number must be workers, meaning non-management personnel. The committee’s role is to contribute to making French the normal everyday language of the workplace.
